La Grande Terche and the Portes du Soleil
The Portes du Soleil area of the French and Swiss Alps may need little introduction to many who come here each year for the 650km of linked skiing in what is one of the largest linked ski domains in the World. The towns that make up the domain encompass all style from high altitude Avoriaz through to typical Savoyard villages such as St Jean d'Aulps.
La Grande Terche has been described in skiing literature as one of the hidden gems away from the crowds and the package tour holidays. All of the accommodation is privately owned giving the resort a community feeling and a French atmosphere. On the doorstep of our apartment you have access to some 35km of skiing along the Espace Roc d'Enfer including one of the longest routes through the forested valley, the Circuit Roc d'Enfer. The skiing caters for everyone from beginners through to those who want more of a challenge, the local ESF ski school is a one minute walk from the apartment next to the telecabine. The school caters for individuals through to groups for beginners and those wanting to brush up on technique.
The town of Morzine, its links to Avoriaz and the rest of the Portes du Soleil, is five minutes drive away meaning that it is on the doorstep and easily accessible. During the winter there is a reliable network of ski buses from La Grande Terche and although not necessary, we recommend a car to give extra flexibility.
La Grande Terche is a self-contained resort offering everything you need for your stay including excellent bars and restuarants, a choice of ski equipment hire, a supermarket for all the necessities and fresh bread and croissants every morning. There are events throughout the season such as carnivals, festivals, ski rescue demonstrations and the fantastic torchlit skiing every Wednesday night accompanied by free mulled wine and hot chocolate.
