Local Activities
Walking
This goes without saying but the walks are varied for all abilities from a stroll along Lac Montriond to mountain walking in the peaks. Walking around the lake offers a series of easy and intermediate walks with tracks leading into the mountains for the more adventurous. St Jean d’Aulps has the added benefit of the ski lifts being open for 2 days a week throughout the summer for walkers, mountain bikers and picnickers. The apartment itself is at the end of a long walk through Col des Follys and what is, in the winter, the Circuit Roc d'Enfer through the forest. Trails for all abilities can be found on the walking pages of the St Jean d'Aulps website.
Mountain Biking
Suitable for all levels including those enthusiasts who are happy going as fast as they can down seriously steep hills! There are championship level courses from Lets Gets and the downhill French Cup and Cyclosportive in June from Morzine. For those of you who would like a more relaxed ride there are many routes where you can go it alone or even have a guided tour. Ski lifts are open during the summer for access to downhill courses. Trails for local mountain biking can be viewed here on the Vallee d'Aulps website.
Fishing
Get away from it all and leave the crowded fishing from the UK behind. Within 10 minutes there are 4 lakes that you can choose from all in beautiful surroundings where you can pitch yourself against the wild trout/grayling and a species of trout that migrate from Lake Geneva each year. The lakes are Montriond, Jotty, Tavaneuse and Mines d’Or. All can be fished with a permit for around 10 Euros a day. There is also excellent river fishing on the River Dranse. Fishing shops are nearby for tackle hire and extra equipment, guides, permits etc. There is also a fishing guide locally where trips can be arranged. Fishing pages can be found at the following link here.
Golf
Anyone fancying a round or two of golf you really are spoilt – you can play at Les Gets where you will find stunning views of the snow-clad Mont Blanc from the 14th Tee. Or, you can play at Avoriaz overlooking the mountains and valleys in the sunshine. For golf course information click here.
Swimming
Two main lakes for outdoor supervised swimming can be found at Lake Montriond and Les Gets. Both offer crystal clear water and are not overcrowded. There are diving platforms and slides at Les Gets. This is the perfect way to cool down in the summer. If you would like a nice day out go to Lake Annecy and enjoy the waters there, maybe hire a boat for the afternoon and swim all day. There is also an Olympic-sized outdoor pool at Morzine just near the town centre.
Paragliding and Ballooning
This is undoubtedly the best way to take in the spectacular views. Paragliding schools will offer you everything from a one off experience to courses for those interested in solo flights. If you don’t fancy having a go for yourself it is still breathtaking watching others and the competitions are spectacular.
Rafting
White-water rafting and kayaking is available on the River Dranse and kayaking on Lac Montriond.
